Antarctic Ice Marathon 2016

I wore bib #9 in the 12th running of this event on Union Glacier.

My top 3 insights:

  1. During the run, overheating is more of a problem than the cold.
  2. The wind is a big performance factor; a few knots make a big difference when you run away from the mountains (which act as wind shields). On a windy day, it may be wise to put on/take off layers multiple times during the run.
  3. The footing is unpredictable, each step will feel different, so it may be hard to get into rhythm. You could waste energy by just trying to work out where to put the next foot; alternatively, with hindsight, it might be more mentally efficient to just run to a straight line and ignore the footing condition.
